Red Chois digs deep for the win
Red Chois (6 m Choisir – Red Blossom, by Green Desert) won the $40,000 Open 1200 metres last Saturday at Ellerslie.
Unperturbed after a tough run in the Concorde Handicap (Gr. 3, 1200m) on Karaka Million night (Jan. 25) at Ellerslie, she dictated terms in front for jockey Samantha Spratt, quickened to a handy advantage early in the straight and dug in when tackled at the 200m.
Third-up after winning three from five during her previous campaign, trainer Stephen Autridge said the riding style of Spratt suited the mare and that she may race next in the $100,000 Haunui Farm King’s Plate (Gr. 3, 1200m) on Derby Day (Feb. 29) at Ellerslie.
“It’s the happiest we’ve ever been with her after the win last Saturday at Ellerslie,” Autridge said. “She loves a fight and a feed.”
